Interpretation and education are the key tools in the kit; becoming socially inclusive is a key driver. The parks provide unique learning experiences, and there are many examples across Wales from Brecon Beacons, Pembrokeshire and Snowdonia:
- The Tenby discovery trail provides intergenerational experiences and adds value to the visitor experience;
- Tailor made days for different needs – for example days for the visually impaired, taster days for carers, conservation projects;
- Personal interpretation (particularly appreciated by those without much social contact eg carers);
- Links with conservation outcomes – like building otter holts and bird boxes – which give young people a feeling of ownership;
- Bronze plaques along the Beacons Way (supported by Park Society through transport for young people to use the walk);
- Themed toys in visitor centre - a Welsh farmhouse and farmers market linking to broader interpretive message of the tea room;
- Brecon Beacons waterfalls area – remote and sensitive, many visitors (180,000 per year) – this new centre will serve geopark area – aims to promote sustainable behaviour, and is being developed with the local community;
- Toolkit to help engage communities in developing interpretation, also introduces media, key themes and planning advice. Can be used beyond the park;
- Discover Tenby project – reaching out to new audiences – offers a virtual walk through video; and
- Snowdonia summit building is near completion – will feature interpretation.
